Kids Drum Set Buyers Guide
How do I determine what size childs drum set to purchase?
Every child is different in size no matter if they are the same age, but as a guideline, for children under the age of 10, Parents should look for a drum set with a bass drum usually between 12-14" in diameter as is found in a kids drumset. For older children, a beginners drumset with a bass drum of at least 16" in diameter is preferred.

Is the drumset adjustable to be able to fit my child's size?
Each child drumset features one of more components that are adjustable to better fit your child's size. The drum stool can usually be adjusted to provide the right height for your child to sit comfortable and drum. Also, on some of the beginner drum sets the stands are also adjustable.

What are the basic components of a drumset?
Most child's drumsets will include the following basic drums and parts: a bass drum; a snare drum; a mounted tom; bass drum pedal, and a cymbal. Some will also come with drum stools and beginners drum sets may also contain hi-hats, a floor tom, an additional mounted tom, and additional stands.

What extras are included with a kids drumset?
Some child's drumset may include the following extra drum parts: a drum key for tuning the drums; a pair of kids drumsticks; educational drumming booklets on how to play the drums; and a free drum seat to go with your drumkit.

What does the basic layout of the kids drumsets look like?
Most kids drumsets are considered 3 piece drumsets because they contain 3 individual drums: snare drum, bass drum, and mounted tom drum. Any additional parts such as stands, drum stools, pedals, cymbals, etc. are not counted when determining how many pieces a drumset includes. The basic layout of a kids drumset is as appears below:

What does the basic layout of the beginner drumsets look like?
The 5 pieces of a beginners drumset indicates the 5 individual drums. So even without the stands and cymbals, a drumset containing 5 drums would be considered a 5 piece drumset. The basic layout of a beginners drumset or starter drumkit is as appears below:
Drums Cymbals A - Bass Drum E - One Ride (or Crash/Ride) B - Snare Drum L - One crash (optional) F & G - Tom-Toms (or Toms) C - Two Hi-Hat Cymbals H - Floor Tom -
Stands / Accessories (the "hardware") M - Snare Stand I - Cymbal Stand - make sure they have
wing nuts for the tops (not shown)D - Foot Pedal for Bass Drum J - Hi Hat Stand for Hi Hat cymbals K - Hi Hat Clutch to hold top Hi Hat Cymbal N - Mount for tom(s) to be mounted on Bass Drum O - Throne or Seat (Optional: A chair may be
used although it limits adjustability)H - Legs for the Floor Tom (if applicable,
sometimes they're mounted on a stand)To The Top of Drumset Buyers Guide
How do I tell the differences between a "toy" drumset and kids drumset?
While the kids drumsets are still closer in the "toy" end of the drumset spectrum than the professional, they differ from the cheap toy drum sets you find at retail outlets in the fact that they feature some of the same characteristics of professional drumsets. The drum heads are tunable by using a drum key just like a pro level drumset and can be replaced if needed. Also, the drum hardware is sturdier and the drum shells are real wood shells instead of cheap plastic.

Should I buy my kid a toy drumset or a beginners drumset?
Whether parents should buy a kids drumset or a beginners drumset depends on several factors. One, is age, and size of the child as Parents should buy the best drumset that is suitable for their child. First and foremost, their feet must be able to reach the pedals. Also, the level of interest in drums and drumming should play a factor in the purchase. If the drumset is something the child might be interested in for years to come, a beginner set is a better choice as it is more preferred by drum teachers.

What is the durability of the kids drum sets?
The drumsets feature real wood drum shells and quality hardware which makes them last longer than the cheaper plastic drumsets. Many beginner drumsets feature double braced hardware for even more stability and durability. As with anything, the durability also depends on how well the drumset is looked after; the drumsets can last a good while with the proper care and maintenance.

How hard is it to put together a kids drum kit?
Childrens drumsets are not very difficult to assemble and most come prepackaged with easy-to-follow instructions. (If they are not included, you can usually contact the company to get them.) Some kids drum sets even come mostly pre-assembled to make it even easier on Parents.

How much should I expect to pay for a childs drum set?
As with anything else in life, you get what you pay for. So, while the cheaper plastic "toy" drums might be more appealing to your wallet initially, they aren't going to last very long and you will need to pay more money for something sturdier like a kids drumset. Prices vary but expect to pay within the range of $80-150 for a quality kids drumset. Beginners drumsets will be slightly pricier as they contain more parts and are closer to the pro level of drumsets. Parents can expect to pay $200-500 for a beginner drumset. (Mid-level to Professional drumsets can cost several thousands of dollars.)
